Abstract

This paper introduces a novel observer strategy for estimating active species concentrations and parameters associated with detrimental crossover and oxidative phenomena in vanadium flow batteries. The estimation process is driven by half-cell voltage measurements of each electrolyte against a reference electrode. The posed estimation problem does not satisfy the classical instantaneous observability condition, which excludes the use of most conventional observer design techniques. Accordingly, a different type of observer relying on the much less restrictive property of backward distinguishability is developed to tackle this challenge. This approach enables real-time estimation of parameters related to the undesired processes, facilitating early detection of potential system malfunctions and ensuring accurate concentration estimates, even when these side-reactions occur at high rates. In turn, the concentration estimates allow for the online computation of the system’s State of Charge and State of Health.
